The most recent poll came out on September 6 (you can check it out here), and it featured the same number one team as the previous week: Penn State (6-0).
But on the back of their home court upset by previous No. 5 Illinois, the former No. 2-ranked Texas Longhorns dropped to No. 5 with Illinois rising to No. 3. This marked the first Longhorn loss in their last 26 games at Gregory Gym, and the first time they’ve been swept on their home court since 2003, when they lost to Notre Dame. But the following night Texas made it past No. 23 Long Beach State to earn their 1,000th program win.
Taking the second spot this week is Stanford, currently 5-0. Also breaking into the top five this week is Florida, who moved from No. 6 to No. 4.
Rounding out the top 10 are Hawaii (No. 6), Nebraska (No. 7), USC (No. 8), Washington (No. 9) and California (No. 10).
Missing from the top 10 is Minnesota, who were ranked No. 8 in the previous week’s poll. Like Texas they dropped a home game to a lower ranked team; in this case it was No. 22 Northern Iowa.
This weekend will be full of outstanding play as the Florida Gators will host the first Nike Big Four Classic, which features Florida, Texas, Stanford and Penn State. The Nittany Lions’ last loss came 108 games ago in 2007, when they lost in 5 games to Stanford.
Between these teams we’ve got 3,702 wins in the history of their programs and a combined 11 NCAA National Championships and 39 NCAA National Semifinal appearances. Stanford and Texas will kick off the tournament on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Penn State and Florida play at 7:30 p.m. Check out http://www.gatorzone.com/ for more details.
